Fear is one of the strongest emotions humans ever experiences. But as William Douglas once said; What is to be feared is fear itself. Fear can be dangerous when it completely over takes you. You can have small fears. For example being a bit scared about a class test is required. It helps you to study. But when the fear exceeds a limit it becomes a liability. Instead of helping you it demotivated you. Fear caused by tragedies, life experiences, loss and many other causes brings you stress and anxiety and the side effects of fright is indeed frightening. It affects your physical and mental health equally. It’s hard to conquer fear. But you can if you have the will for it.
What is fear?
The simplest definition and the most meaningful one that can be given to fear is that it’s an unpleasant feeling triggered by the perception of danger, real or imagined.
Biologically, fear can be defined as the instinctual response to potential danger due to the excess release of adrenaline and stress hormones into the blood stream. [For more…]
It’s easy to conquer fear from subconscious mind. For that you need to take care of some measures and follow it without stop.
Identify your fears
This is the first step. You need to identify what scares you – whether it’s an object or person or places or situations.
One can only conquer fear if he or she realizes the cause and roots of the so called fear.
List down what scares you and when they scare you.
For example, people who are afraid of dark might not find it scary when they sit inside a dark cinema theatre or a dimly lit party hall. They get scared when they in dark alone. So that’s narrowed down. He or she is not afraid of darkness but is terrorized by staying in darkness alone.
Remove the stress
To remove fear, first remove the consequences of it. Fear for some brings stress. If so take medication or practise meditation for reducing stress.
Beware: when you take medication make sure that the medicine never turns into an addiction. A person who has stress and cannot sleep well takes sleeping pills and may eventually becomes victims of addiction. Always have doctor’s prescription before you take any medicine.
Another method is exercising daily. It sets your metabolism right and reduces the stress by increasing the blood flow and hormonal level. Exercise can improve concentration and take your mind off anxiety for some time. It also releases endorphins which are feel good hormones that improve sleep and appetite. Try jogging every morning or do simple yoga.
The next step is eating healthy. I repeat, eating HEALTHY. I don’t mean over eating because over eating comes negatively for health. Make sure that you take up a balanced diet with ample amount of proteins, carbohydrates, pulses, minerals and vitamins. And try to get those meals at the same time every day. Also manage your eating time. That is, you should have at least three hour gap between your breakfast and lunch and then two hour gap between your dinner and bedtime.
Confront your fears
The risky step but the most successful one – confronting your fears.
If you are scared of darkness you can only conquer fear of darkness by facing it.
You ought to walk into a dark room if you need to overcome the fear of dark rooms. Do it step by steps.
For example, the first time you walk into a dark room get yourself a friend or your family member with you. Follow this for the next few days and then slowly detach yourself from your friend while entering the room. And then ask your friend to leave after dropping you to the room. Eventually you will be able to step into the room without anyone’s company.
Consult a therapist
If you feel like you aren’t able to treat yourself from fear, consult a therapist and speak out your problems. Attend therapy sessions and there you will be able to interact with people who have same fears as yours. This would help you talk freely about it and eventually you will be comfortable with your fears. Being friendly with our demons is a technique to overcome them. By this you will be able to forget about your fear and thus successfully overcoming it.
Fear is one of the emotions that ought to be controlled. Because once it breaks and exceeds it barriers it would be hard to cope up with it. Instead of fears, one should fear the fear itself.
Therefore it is necessary to conquer fear as one’s ability to speak and behave well in front of people is decided by the level of fear inside your mind.
Just identify your fears and be confident to conquer it. Relax and reduce the stress and slowly, step by step, confront your fears. Eat healthy, live healthy and don’t give up! You will be successful!
